Minister of Music Position

Glendale Baptist Church: a caring community of equality and grace


The Minister of Music will be responsible for the following ongoing assignments regarding worship music: 


  • Conduct choir for worship services; 
  • Lead congregational music during worship services, conveying warmth and hospitality and inviting the congregation to participate fully in worship; 
  • Rehearse with the worship choir regularly, conducting additional rehearsals for special music as needed; 
  • Communicate with soloists and other musicians regarding their participation in worship; 
  • Rehearse with supplementary musicians, soloists, smaller ensembles, etc. as needed; 
  • Coordinate musical experiences with guest leaders/teachers as needed; 
  • Find and procure music that is appropriate for Glendale’s worship, overseeing the licensing process for all of Glendale’s music; 
  • Coordinate the maintenance of the worship music library, ensuring that it is organized and functional; 
  • Participate in weekly Worship Leadership meetings, collaborating with the Pastors and other worship leaders to plan worship; 
  • In collaboration with the Pastors help select music for worship that is appropriate for the season of the church year and is connected to the lectionary texts and/or to the themes for worship; 
  • Engrave hymns and responses for worship as needed 


Experience, Background, Qualities

In the area of Worship, the Minister of Music must have the following experience and background:


•Knowledge of sacred choral and instrumental music for adults and children—ideally in a number of genres and styles; 

  • Relevant skills and experience in order to develop the church’s music library; 
  • Theological sensitivity, including sensitivity to inclusive and progressive language in music and worship with attention to gender, sexuality, class, race, ethnicity, physical abilities, mental abilities, etc.; 
  • Skill and knowledge in choral conducting for worship; 
  • An appreciation for Glendale’s worship and its tradition as well as a sense of personal creativity in order to enhance it; 
  • Ability and willingness to challenge the congregation musically; 
  • Ability and willingness to be inclusive, convey hospitality, and foster engaged participation; 


In addition, the Minister of Music must have the following personal attributes: 

  • A commitment to shared ministry; 
  • Awareness of and commitment to the ministries of the church; 
  • Organizational skills; 
  • Communication skills; propensity to communicate in ways which foster collaboration and mutual understanding; 
  • A willingness to participate in the life of the church and the ministry of the congregation;
  • Knowledge of technology for multi-access worship: use of the sound system, zoom and sound quality for zoom, Finale or other program for engraving music;


Employment Specifications 


  • The Minister of Music will work 10 hours per week (on average) for a salary of approximately $16,000 year. They are expected to be present for the Sundays of Advent, Christmas Eve, during Holy Week, Easter Sunday, and All Saints Sunday. There may be occasional other times of worship where the Minister of Music will be expected to participate (funerals, Blessing of the Animals, etc.)
  • The Minister of Music will receive 4 weeks of vacation and will recruit coverage for their duties during their time away.
  • The Minister of Music will work collaboratively with Glendale’s pastors, pianist, worship leaders, office administrator.
