Danny's Report

7/13/2010

Hey, Guys!  We are having a terrific time.  In Yellowstone, we saw 9 grizzly bears and 5 black bears, about a million bison (including the one that went through our campsite.)  We had 5 grizzlies in our campground, but we didn't see them.  There were two "teenager" bears, a girl and a boy, whose mother had kicked out of the house in order to tend to the new kids.  So the male had bitten through a tent, despite the firecrackers and rubber bullets being shot at his rear.  He finally got trapped and sent off to a zoo.  His sister learned from his delinquent behavior and either returned home to Mom or went off on her own.  It was very excited for several days.  They wouldn't allow tents or pop-up campers in the campground so people were sleeping in their cars and stuff.

My favorite bear was a big male grizzly who we found in the middle of a field in the Lamar Valley.  He walked straight back to the river, got into a very strong current, and at points was washed downstream.  Eventually, he climbed out on the other side by standing on his back legs and stretching as high as he could to climb.  It was really exciting to watch!

Fun  facts about bison:  they can run 30 mph, they weigh up to 2000 lbs, and they are bigger than the minivan we rented.  They are the size of a truck and they like to hang around in the middle of the street.  (Or in our campsite.) Also in herds of thousands in the Lamar Valley.  My favorite bison was the one we saw when we were finishing a hike to the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone (which was pretty awesome), and all the traffic was stopped in the road at the trailhead.  We thought they were looking over the bridge at the waterfall, but a man was pointing and hollering, "Be careful!" and there was a HUGE male bison running straight at us as we came off of the trail.  We hid behind some trees until the bison had run clear through the road and off to the picnic area.  We thought he was going to level a little red convertible, but it survived.  We followed him through the picnic area to our van to get our own picnic, then he returned to the picnic area with 2 of his buddies.  Foolish bison!

Today I'm hanging out for awhile, then going for a long horseback ride after lunch.  Hope it's a good day there, too!

Peace out~

Danny

    yup
yeah, bison love to walk around parking lots and streets. crazy things LOL. I have a picture somewhere from a 1996 Yellowstone trip when we got stuck a while on a road because there were so many bison and they just wouldn't budge. LOL

    Bison
I'd heard that bison can move fast and are dangerous. I'm impressed with your story because farm cows (who actually seem to notice humans) seem more dangerous than bison (who never seemed to pay us any mind or move faster than their mouths could eat).

    Teenager Bears in the Campsite
Wow Danny!! While I tremendously enjoy my daily encounters with wildlife (chipmunks, squirrels, birds, and our 2 lazy cats), YOUR encounters make my jaw drop. How very exciting to watch teenage bears in the campsite, swimming bears, and picnicing bisons. Thank you for sharing with all of us. We love and miss each of you, and look forward to your return.

...until now. Thanks for the detailed descriptions Danny. I know nothing about Bison, but now feel like I have some basic details. Also, I have bear joke for you when you get back...it doesn't translate well online.

    Thanks for posting!
