Canned Hams

7/1/2010

Back in the day, when David Letterman was a weatherman, he once made the effusive statement that the hail was falling like canned hams.  We didn't actually see "Hormel" on the labels, but the chunks of ice were awfully big.  This morning, yesterday afternoon, AND the day before yesterday.  It's a wonder of a different sort, I suppose.  David, Lara and Mia have driven the rv into West Yellowstone this morning to try to get the ceiling vent thingy replaced, as it's in a dozen pieces and we're heading back into bear country.  (Probably, though, it's the ground squirrels and the raccoons that would find their way in through a hole in the ceiling!)  Danny and I are in the KOA outside of the park doing laundry and charging electronic things.

It's Canada Day, so we're all wearing our Waterton/Canada shirts (except for Danny, whose shirt says, "EH? (ay), n. [Colloq.] Canadian term for right?, okay? please, maybe, thank you, how about it?, don't you?.  Used after a statement or question.  Said with spirit and pride even to Americans and other visitors.  Why Do Canadians Say EH?  IT'S BETTER THAN SAYING HUH?"  (He's also wearing his Canadian hockey jersey over the t-shirt.)

Danny reports for the travel log that the last week in Glacier was outstanding.  Good hikes, glacial lakes, his first foray into the world of skinny-dipping ("What a RUSH!")  The folks coming down the trail experienced a sort of rush, too, I guess.  Now we're transitioning into Yellowstone, where Danny reports having seen 2.5 buffalo (one was seen only in the aft-region, shaking its tail from a thicket.)  Also elk, and bald eagles, and a swan.  And the ONLY available campsite in the park (no lie) which we left chairs in, and money in the drop box, and are hoping is still there when we return late this morning.  We'll camp in the Norris campground for 4 nights, checking out all the hydrothermal stuff and probably spend a day in the Lamar Valley looking for wolves.  Through the windshield. Then to Madison for another 5 nights.

We'll check in when we find wifi access again.  Until then, love and peace from the Wild West.

Amy and Danny

I love reading about your travels, and this is the funniest update ever!

According to the Five Iron Frenzy Song, "They say 'Eh' instead of 'What' or Duh!' That's the mighty power of Canada." Although, the Canadians I listen to say "Hey" instead of "Eh"... hm.

Still wishing for continued wonder and a renewed sense of life in your traveling. :)

    Eh!!
Yep! That's pretty much it in Canada. It's sounds so funny. Reminds me of American Hillbillies. But I agree it is better than huh although they use it like Bitte in Germany. Thanks, please, huh, etc.

    Sorry about the hail.

Funny about the skinny dipping. It is a very freeing experience. Next maybe you can swim in a hot spring. I hope so.

    Luv to U all.

    Eh
Glad that you got the genuine flavor of Canada on your trip across the border. We'd love to see the shirts! Good luck on the Yellowstone wildlife. Is this where you do the fly fishing? If so, good luck at that too!
When Joel was taking a break from during exams he and Papa met at the farm at Ft. Lawn & among other adventures went skinny dipping in the Catawba River. That's something you don't forget and neither do any spectators.
Enjoy the next ten days at Yellowstone!
    Love you all!

    Country music
How's the country music up there? When we were in Canada, we heard country music everywhere. Far more than we hear here in Music City!

I know you'll see LOTS of critters in Y'stone! We didn't see any ordinary wolves but we did see one in sheep's clothing. At a distance, we were all convinced it was a wolf but, when got closer, it had turned itself into a sheep. You may see many of these magical creatures.

    Skinny-dipping...
my favorite sport. I grew up in a land of lakes, well, ponds of sorts. We used to swim and fish, always watchful of our "friendly," pesky alligator. And the water wasn't near as cold. Welcome to the tribe, Danny.

I absolutely love reading these travel logs! I'd ask that you stay out longer, but we really do miss you all quite a bit.

Hope the RV ceiling thingy gets all fixed.

    Canned Hams
We am trying to imagine the sound of those hams hitting the RV! Must have been loud.

By the way, the Madison River Valley may be the prettiest place these two travlers have ever been.
    Enjoy!

    Passport Kids! Camp
I spent July 4th at Sewanee. My sister and two nieces were taking a walk when we heard some woman yelling my name. A white minivan came at us! It was Selena and Rand! I saw the kids, too. Didn't get to see Trayte or the Berrys. Who knew you could drive 90 miles and see so many Glendalers!

Reid, Dorothy, Walden, Anna, Patrick, Jack Henry, Chris and I are heading to Passport Kids! Camp in the morning. The theme is "Barefoot" and I think the kids have dreams of four shoeless days!

Our male contingency will be MIA tomorrow afternoon due to the World Cup soccer final. Surely Chris can find a TV in a family friendly locale. I just don't think Patrick and Jack Henry could pass for 21 no matter how we dress them!

Can't wait for your next post!
    Love,
    Julie

    Be Wild, O My Soul...
As we sing "Be Wild, O My Soul" each Sunday, I think of all of you and offer up a prayer, a disjointed thought of sorts, and sometimes a giggle. I try to imagine where you all are at that moment...the cool air, the amazing landscape, and the wide open spaces. Ok, and maybe what life is like living in an RV that long and how our familiy might have screamed at each other by now!

Your posts have helped us continue to feel connected as you devour God's beauty and wilderness and let your own souls be wild!

your postcards have made us laugh and smile to say the least. It makes your time away a wee bit more bearable.

we pray for a safe return home and look forward to hearing all the wonderful stories.

sending lots of love and laughter from nashville,

    molly

p.s. walden has been watering your peace lilies and emmie's tree at the school each week. you will be amazed at how much emmie's tree has grown since you left.
