Mia's Story

6/25/2010

Well, there's a lot going on.  We've seen a grizzly bear--it crossed the road (Going-to-the-Sun Road that crosses Glacier Park) right in front of our car!  We knew it was a grizzly because of the hump on its back.  We saw some minks playing along a creek in a meadow (though they looked like otters to us.)  From our campsite, with our binoculars, we saw LOTS of bighorn sheep and mountain goats.  And we didn't need binoculars to see the ground squirrels and magpies.  This was my first of ALL of these animals.

And, really neat thing to see:  while we enjoyed High Tea in the lobby of the Prince of Wales Lodge, a giant bald eagle soared past the window.  We have seen several other bald eagles, too, and some golden eagles.  There are mule deer and white tail deer and moose and elk (2 of them were banging their antlers together!)  And don't forget the open-range cows walking all over the roads on the Blackfeet reservation.  Neat!

The picture is of Chief Mountain, a very holy place for the Blackfeet Indians.  A wonderful storyteller, Mr. Eagle Speaker, told us about people going on vision quests on Chief Mountain.  They would take a bison skull--very sacred to them--and use it for a pillow as they waited for a vision.  There are still bison skulls up on the mountain.  Isn't that something!?

See you soon.

Mia

Montana, Glacier and Big Chief Mtn.
I am so happy you are enjoying Glacier. Did you go through Browning, MT. I spent a week outside of Browning living in a tipi learning about the Blackfeet culture. That's where I got a lot of things that Mia and Danny might have seen like a Blackfeet drum, buffalo hide, horn spoon, cow chip, traditional dolls, etc.
I recognized Big Chief Mtn. right away. Our hostess took us to the base and shared stories, built a fire, prayed for us and tied a prayer cloth in our honor to a tree. Did you see the prayer cloths tied all around?
Isn't Waterton beautiful? High Tea in the Prince of Wales - WOW! We wanted to go to Goat Haunt but we couldn't work it in. We stayed at Many Glaciers in a cabin and hiked in that area.
I love the animals. Wait til you get to Yellowstone and Tetons! We saw lots there too. There's even a road named Moose Wilson in Jackson. Go to the Laurence Rockefeller Preserve that's on Moose Wilson if you can.
I look forward to seeing your pics and hearing your stories. We're all missing you!

    PS
I really can't wait to hear about high tea at the Prince of Wales. That sounds like my kind of place. I would love to do that. That is an experience not many young girls have. Great stories for school next year. xoxoxo

Your FIRST Magpie is your "Life" Magpie. You will never forget where you saw your first of anything. Keep a list of all the birds you see. This will be the start of your Life List. Have fun with it:)
    Miss you all.
