Top Three Coolest Things We've Seen and Done

Lara:  1-the Badlands; 2-Cliff Swallows nesting on the bridge over the White River out from Interior, South Dakota (we found them in the bird book--thanks, Mr. Jim and Ms. Sharon!!); 3-the flatness of the prairies

Mia:  1-Mt. Rushmore (it was so cool and I think that they didn't honor Teddy Roosevelt enough because he's back in a little corner); 2-the Grasslands (they have a lot of animals, including the black-footed ferret, which is endangered.  And nocturnal, so we didn't see any); 3-all of the animals we've seen:  toads, mule deer, horses, cows, bighorn sheep, longhorn cow-things, pronhorns, and, we think, a mink.

Danny:  1-the Badlands; 2-Mt. Rushmore (but where are the Democrats?); 3-the St. Louis Arch at sunrise

David:  1-the waves of grass on the prairies and grasslands; 2-the fossil trail in the Badlands; 3-Mt. Rushmore

Amy:  1-the Bighorn Mountains (holy smokes!  Like the Tetons, erupting up out of eastern Wyoming--covered with snow); 2-the Black HIlls (a resort area is a resort area, but it was awfully pretty--and the "Caution:  Bighorn Sheep Crossing Next Mile" signs through Hill City were cool); 3-Nick Clifford (the last living crew member who created Mt. Rushmore.  We got him to sign a book for us and got a photo with him.)

We're camped on the banks of the Yellowstone River this morning, enjoying a breakfast of champions (powder-sugar donuts and orange juice), and about to cross Montana (Jen S., we saluted you as we drove passed Colstrip.) We'll pick up a rental car in Great Falls so we can get around the National Parks easier, then camp in East Glacier tonight.  Hoping that your travels today are good ones, too!

    Cliff Swallows
Lara - There are lots of swallows - so glad the book helped you identify those. Hope you see lots more birds so you can look them up too.
Danny - A good question - Where are the democrats?
Mia - great animals out there. I love them all too. PS: you are right about Teddy!
Safe travels all. We miss you and pray for you every day.

    Top 3 cool things
Don't know how you could choose three top things out of the cool things youve seen. You traveled territory today that we haven't seen. Now you're about to see our tracks along the way. Hope that you see lots of wonders tomorrow! We look forward to your impressions of Glacier.
    Love you!

    Democrats are Mt. Rushmore
Not to be partisan or anything, but Washington was truly larger than any party so he doesn't count. Jefferson was the first Democrat, although then named Democrat-Republican but we know what he really meant, and while I cannot truly speculate on TR and AL as to current party affiliation, I would point out that TR was the first president to advocate a national health care system and a true progressive and Lincoln would not recognize the current Republican party. We miss all of you! But we're glad you're doing what you're doing. Its hot here!

    Big Horns
    Hey Gang,
The Bighorns are really cool. We followed a snow plow off the top one afternoon in a bunch of snow. In September..... Stop along the way in Montana and smell the sweetgrass

...we stayed on the Blackfoot? Indian Reservation and had trout cooked for our breakfast.....trout that had fed on fresh-water shrimp. Memorable!!!! Political Parties and Mt. Rushmore
    Danny,

I was reading your postings out loud to Carson, and he said, "Well, Republicans were a little different than they are now back in the day--practically the Democrats of today." He's a college student majoring in International Studies (and there's a lot of Political Science in that major), so you know, he's an authority on such things! :-) I guess he and Stewart Clifton can be buddies now.

    Montana :)
you know, I dreamt about Colstrip last night. I must have felt you thinking about me. :)

Dad and I used to fish in the Yellowstone River, up in Forsyth. Those were good times.

    Montana
I've got family (in the more known sense of the word). up there, Billings, Montana - or is it Cut Bank? If you run into any Howards, do tell 'em Gomer said hi. You'll find most of the Howards on tractors and in over-alls. Good people. I took a train ride all the way across northern Montana. We called it the-never-ending-state. Take particular interest to the clouds.

    Jefferson etc.
I have loved reading all of your posts! You all have definitely inspired me to take on a cross-country trip at some point in my life.

As for Jefferson, given his religious leanings and his understanding of God, I think he might have fit in well at Glendale...well, except for the slave owning part, he would have definitely needed to work on that. Did you know that he made his own edition of the Bible?

Much love to all of you!
