More from the Mountains

6/5/2010

Danny:  I am having a great time and I can't believe that we have seen 29 bears since Tuesday morning.  Some of them really close!  This has been a great trip to the mountains--we've done some great hikes.

Mia: Today we hiked to Spruce Flat Falls and went behind the waterfall and swam in 2 cold mountain rivers.  Brrr!  I miss you all and loved the pictures of the balloons and berries!  Love you, Mia.

Amy: Last summer, during a sabbatical dry run, Emmie and I were treated to an amazing light show during the Perseid Meteor Shower from our porch in Wyoming.  Come to find out, Tennessee's own light show is just as remarkable, though firmly on our planet.  The synchronous fireflies in Elkmont in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park rivals just about anything I've ever seen.  We kept stopping along the Little River Trail to gape, gasp, and say, "This is amazing!"  And run into each other, as we were walking in the pitch darkness.  If you're into WONDER, you have another week or two to hie yourselves to the Smokies along about dusk, catch a trolly from the Sugarlands Visitor Center, and watch what is surely one of the wonders of the natural world.  Since we couldn't get good pictures of the fireflies, you'll have to settle for a bear!

    Fireflies
I know the show given by the fireflies was spectacular but the closeness of that bear in this picture is also spectacular! You all did get a good look at him, didn't you! Know the hikes have been exciting! Wish we could have seen the show of the fireflies! So glad the children and you and David are experiencing this! Papa and I are missing you all!

    So yeah
Fireflies last night here.... my usual summer joy and then April annouces that you all too saw fireflies. THEN today Lyndsey and I walked at Radnor lake, took in two turtles (hidden well by green algae), a deer, some turkeys, a chipmunk, and a squirrel.... maybe we are together in the universe.

    Being "wild" for the Source!
Fireflies and bears and waterfalls. You will have a book full (and hearts full) or wonders! Lee has synchronized fireflies in his yard for the first time this summer. Maybe they are spreading! We have wonderful fireflies in our yard. They will keep us all together!

The song to which Brian refers
In case you can't listen to "fireflies," here's my favorite part:
    I get a thousand hugs
    from ten thousand lightening bugs
as they try to teach me how to dance.

(BTW, I'm sending a thousand kisses to go along with those hugs. Give Danny & David at least half of them, since they like the attention so much.)
