In the Smokies

Picnic Photo

Mia:  7 bears on Emmie's birthday!  B and Papa and Baba and Poppy left today to go home. We're looking forward to going backpacking, and to seeing the synchronous fireflies.

Danny:  I can't believe that we saw 7 bears!  That's a new record!  We have done a lot of swimming at the Townsend Wye (where the rivers converge.)  We also hiked 9.5 miles in a thunderstorm.  That was fun. I brought some poison ivy with me from Nashville.  Not so fun.

Lara:  We had a picnic in Cades Cove with our grandparents and some close friends.  An artist from the Smokies painted a painting for Emmie--it is bluets, one of our favorite wildflowers.  He wrote her name on it and we love it.

David:  I got a lot of good pictures of the bears.  We'll download things when we're not bootlegging off of a motel's wifi.

Amy:  I'm reading about the Trail of Tears, and Henri Nouwen on prayer of the heart.  A friend made a quilt for us out of Emmie's favorite t-shirts--the whole family can fit under it, and we love it.  We're planning a short backpacking excursion for the next day or so.  I'm trying to do some aerobic relaxation in preparation for that.  It doesn't seem to work that way.  Here's a photo of our picnic in Cades Cove yesterday. Hope that this weekend's Great Glendale Getaway/Spiritual Practices Retreat is fantastic!  We'll be thinking of you.

    Synchronous Fireflies
I saw the synchronous fireflies with our youth group a few years ago when we attended the summer youth "Get-a-Way" at Maryville College. They're breathtaking. Savor them! Blessings on your sabbatical sojourn, Carl

    9.5 miles!!
So I am wondering how long it takes to hike 9.5 miles in a thunderstorm with poison ivy!! Our family did 2.6 Monday and we thought we were doing good. Impressive stuff Webb family!

    Poison Ivy
Danny, I'm itching just thinking about you! Heat releases the histamine (the stuff that makes it itch), so point a hair dryer at it. It will itch intensely for a few seconds but then it won't itch for a long time!
    Love,
    Julie

    Chicken Feed
Hi Amy and Family! So good to hear about your wonder-full sabbatical. We wanted to let you know that we just enjoyed the best corn bread made from that great "chicken feed" you shared with us! Thanks so much! We look forward to keeping up with your journey and to seeing you and again in August.

From the "holler" of Kingston Springs
Though it is sweltering here in "this here holler"--when my little grandsons and I wade in the creek, it is just perfect! Surroundings and companions make all the difference, don't they?

The ffirilees might still be there if you wanted to take a trip out to Elkmont. The trolley will not be running on the 17th though.
