Wow, What a Summer!
Summer 2016, “Shall We Gather at the River,” is shaping up to offer Glendalers all sorts of new experiences to learn, to worship, and to share. There are several parts of our summer emphasis:
A change of schedule.
~The worship choir will get a lovely break—the last choir rehearsal will be June 15 until resuming on August 10.
~Cooks and teachers will get a break, too! There will be no Wednesday night supper or programming for children, youth or adults starting June 29 and resuming on August 10.
~Don Schlosser will get a break, as the Church Council has offered him a 4-week sabbatical from July 17-August 7. He and Brian will go to Barcelona for Danika’s wedding.
Some new worship approaches.
~For the Sundays from June 26 through August 7, our worship will take on an old-time flare with music from bluegrass to shaped-note to gospel. There will be storytelling, a very relaxed feel (for us, anyway!), and new ways to participate.
~Wanna play in the bluegrass band? There will be a weekly jam session at Glendale on Tuesday nights, starting at 7:00 pm on June 14, to prepare music for each Sunday. Break out the banjo, resin up the bow, string your washtub bass (okay, maybe not) and come out whenever you’re able to get ready for Sunday’s bluegrass worship!
The same old purpose.
Our summer plans are designed to provide this congregation, our guests, and our neighbors a way to enter into Holy Presence with blessing, authenticity, and joy. The tone of our worship will be different; the care with which we plan and the reverence with which we enter the sanctuary will be consistent with our theology of worship. The joy with which we gather on Wednesday evenings will be, we hope, enhanced by the ability to take a short break from the responsibilities of providing those. With that in mind, our last Wednesday evening gathering, on June 22, will be a cookout and song session, where we will sing together the new stuff in preparation for our first Sunday of “Shall We Gather at the River.” When school rolls around, we’ll start back up on Wednesday, August 10, with a “Build a Giant Banana Split” party to welcome ourselves back together.
Don’t miss out on opportunities to try something a little different this summer! If you have ideas that you’d like to contribute to our summer of bluegrass and fun, don’t keep it to yourself! Liturgy—the work of the people—takes so many different forms. We’ll have a summertime season of discovery together at Glendale.
