Role Description for Minister of Music

In the area of Worship:

the Minister of Music has. . .
  • A knowledge of sacred choral music in a variety of genres and styles
  • Liturgical acumen
  • Theological sensitivity, including a sensitivity to inclusive language in music and worship with attention to gender, class, race, ethnicity, physical and mental abilities, etc.
  • Skill and knowledge in choral conducting for worship
  • An appreciation for Glendale’s worship and its tradition and creativity to bring to enhance it
  • Ability and willingness to challenge us musically
  • A personal spirituality that appreciates individual and communal worship

the Minister of Music will. . .
  • Recruit and lead a choir or choirs to provide worship leadership in the area of music for Sunday morning worship each week, special services of the church year (Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Advent, Christmas Eve, etc.), funerals or memorial services, vespers, and other opportunities that may arise.
  • Rehearse with the worship choir weekly and with other musicians, soloists, choirs, etc. as needed
  • In collaboration with the pastors and other worship leaders, choose music for worship that is appropriate for the season of the church year and is connected with the lectionary texts and/or theme for worship for each service
  • Conduct choir for all worship services
  • Lead congregational music in worship
  • Convey warmth and hospitality in leading worship, inviting the congregation to participate in worship
  • Communicate with soloists and other musicians regarding their participation in worship
  • Inform the pastors and the church secretary regarding who will be providing music for worship by Wednesday evening of each week
  • Include children and youth in worship leadership through music
  • Meet weekly with the pastors and other worship leaders to plan worship
  • Attend regular monthly meetings of the Worship Division

the Minister of Music will. . .
  • Serve as a resource for children and youth music programs and encourage those programs
  • Provide opportunities for members of the congregation of all ages to offer their musical gifts in appropriate contexts (handbells, ensembles, solos, etc.)
  • Order and maintain choir robes and stoles for each season of the liturgical year
  • Order and maintain the church music library
  • Communicate with the pastors about pastoral concerns that come to the attention of the Minister of Music
  • Be involved in the life of the church
