Third Trip to Cuba

After attending the annual meeting sessions, the group traveled to Santa Clara where we met the new born daughter of Niubes Montes de Oca, the pastor of the congregation. The infant, also named Niubes like her mother and grandmother, was about two weeks old. The group took a "baby shower in a suitcase" from Glendalers. Her father Bernardo described his infant as a very privileged child to have so much attention. The group conducted a blessing service for baby Niubes which was led by Raye Nell and April.

The highlight of the trip for the Glendalers was the service on March 12 in which the congregation was constituted as a church--Alberto J. Diaz Baptist Church (Iglesia Bautista Alberto J. Diaz). The service included an exchange of banners with the congregation. The Glendale delegation brought two banners one in Spanish and one in English with the words "La Paz de Cristo" and "The Peace of Christ" written upon them. The banners were trimmed with ribbon streamers on each side which Glendale members and children had signed their names. Before and after the constitution service members and children of the Santa Clara congregation signed ribbons which were brought back to Nashville an affixed to the banner which now hangs in our church and is displayed on first Sunday mornings in the sanctuary when Glendale especially remembers its partner church in prayers. A particularly moving part of the service was the celebration of communion for the first time as a church. The members shared communion using the communion set which had been a gift presented by the second group of Glendale travelers to Santa Clara in 2001. The set is exactly the same as that used at Glendale made of myrrh wood. The third group brought the small communion glasses to complete the set. They were used that night.

The group traveled next to Matanzas, Cuba to visit the First Baptist Church of Matanzas and see its Kairos Center. We also visited the Ecumenical Seminary of Matanzas where there is a fledgling Baptist studies program.

The group returned from Havana on November 14 but didn't reach Nashville until the next day because of a security breach at the Miami International Airport which shut down the airport for part of the day. On Sunday November 17, the group reported at the morning worship at Glendale and presented the banner with ribbons signed by the Santa Clara church members.
