Vanderbilt Divinity School Community Book Read: Dying of Whiteness

Glendalers are invited to join the Public Theology and Racial Justice Collaborative at Vanderbilt Divinity School and local congregations in reading Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America’s Heartland. On October 29 at 7pm, the Collaborative and the Nashville Public Library will host a community town hall discussion of the book with the author, Dr. Jonathan Metzl, professor of sociology and psychiatry at Vanderbilt University and director of its Center for Medicine, Health, and Society. The Rev. Deborah Lynn will be convening discussions at Glendale and has agreed to serve as Glendale’s representative on stage at the town hall. Merbia Knight of NPR will serve as the media host. It is the Collaborative’s hope, “that a community conversation around the implications of this book will stir our congregations and activist spaces to wrestle with the didactic call to respond in these challenging times.”

Our gatherings will begin at noon and end at 1:00 in the Fellowship Hall on the following dates:

September 8 - Introduction*
September 22 - Missouri (Gun Laws)
September 29 - Tennessee (Healthcare)
October 13 - Tennessee (Healthcare cont.)
October 20 - Kansas (Education)
October 27 - Conclusion/wrap-up

Note that the subjects could change as we progress. Attend as many as you can but do not worry if you can't attend all sessions. After the first week, we will stick to fairly consistent format: main points, review excerpts, takeaways, questions.

Important Note: please email to request childcare in advance of any session by the Wednesday prior to the session.
